Jonathan’s musical interests began at the age of five, with the introduction of a very small, shiny violin. After many years of considerable effort on this, he decided it was becoming far too tedious, and swapped to the double bass, via several other stringed instruments.
After a year at Middlesex University on a jazz and dance course, Jonathan spent four years at Trinity College of Music under the tuition of Chi-Chi Nwanoku, gaining valuable knowledge on historical performance practice. He went on to complete a two-year postgraduate course at the Royal Academy of Music, learning with Robin McGee and Duncan McTier.
During his time at college he performed with a live drum and bass band in central London clubs, and formed an Arabic folk band to develop his keen interest in Lebanese folk music and the tuning systems of Safi al-Din within the Maqam modal concepts.
Jonathan now enjoys a busy and varied freelance career, performing with orchestras in the UK and abroad, such as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, The English Concert, The Sixteen, The London Strings, Kings Consort, Chamber Orchestra Anglia, Orchestra of St John's, The London Handel Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Belmont Ensemble of London, The Sweelink Players, Southbank Sinfonia, Steinitz Bach Players, The Saraband Consort and many other period and modern ensembles. He has broadcast widely, including Irish dance music recordings and live concerts for BBC Radio 3.
